#BecomingMichelleObama
So, I was blessed to be able to attend the Becoming Tour and learn from and about our Forever First Lady, Michelle Obama.
Here are my takeaways:
Girls need you to fan their flames. Not stifle them, not extinguish them, not curb them so they can be more “marriageable.” Girls deserve to blaze too. When they find their flame, keep it lit.
There will be people who don’t see in you what you see in yourself. That’s ok. See it anyway. Believe it anyway. Do the work anyway. In the end, it’s about you. It’s not about them anyway.
Children know when you don’t believe in them. It’s not always about what you say. Sometimes, it’s what you don’t say. How you don’t engage. You can make or break a kid in those moments.
If you’re in a position of leverage to push for other women, you have a responsibility to do so. We have an obligation to look out for more than just ourselves.
Lastly, if we want society to value us, we have to value us. We have to be more open in telling our stories. Too often, we, as women, are taught to compete where we should encourage. But our stories have value. Our voices have value. Talk to other women. Learn from other women. Encourage other women.
We’re the ones we’ve been waiting for.
Thanks to my tribe for sharing the night with me.
